Course Descriptions
Musical Comedy Workshops (Preteen through adult)
Worth-Tyrrell’s hallmark courses. These are "performance" classes including audition and interview techniques with training in as many elements of "real world" theatre as possible: acting, singing, dancing, costumes, scenery, lights, director, musical director, and stage manager, etc. The final class is for an invited audience.
Music Theatre Workshops (Age 6 through preteen)
Children’s versions of the Musical Comedy classes. Somewhat more relaxed with game playing, the crazy warm-up, and improvisation, but with the same emphasis on performance skills.
This course develops a hierarchy of skills for the actor ranging from the most fundamental (being seen and heard) to the more abstract (getting inside the character’s head). Topics will include auditions, the rehearsal process, and performance. Scenes and monologues will be studied to help students discover clues to character behavior and motivation within the context of the play. A great companion course to the Musical Comedy Workshops.
Parent & Child (Age 1½ to 3) NEW
A class designed for children old enough to dance but who still need one-to-one attention. A parent must accompany the child in class (Could be a babysitter or guardian, but not an older sibling) and join in exploring the beginnings of dance. Starting each class with a fun warm up, the students progress through the year from learning the basics of how to move to music to basic beginner ballet steps. Parent & Child
PreSchool Dance (Age 3 through 6)
Pre-school dance exercises mind and body, strengthens growing muscles, and creates a love for dance and fitness that lasts a lifetime. PreSchool classes are designed to be fun!
Students in Ballet/Tumbling are ready to be part of a class (Children younger than 3, while capable are usually not yet ready to be part of a group - see Mommy & Me) Ballet/Tumbling covers basic Ballet, occasional sing alongs, plus forward rolls, straddle rolls, cartwheels and more.
At 5 students are ready for Ballet/Tap (Younger students tend to have so much fun playing with the shoes that it's almost impossible to teach a class). It's similar in approach to Ballet/Tumbling, replacing the mat work with Tap.
Funky dance to funky music. Lots of MTV style. Hip Hop
The basic "building block" for dancers, ballet develops the body control essential for intermediate and advanced work in other forms.
Lyrical (Open to anyone in 2nd or 3rd level Jazz or Ballet)
While based on many of the elements of classical ballet, Lyrical dance combines ballet with jazz and contemporary dance techniques. Students must also be enrolled in a 2nd or 3rd level Jazz or Ballet Class to participate in this class. Lyrical: having a poetic, expressive quality
An exciting dance form taught to contemporary music. Concentrated technique to develop and control each part of the body. Broadway style (Fosse, Tharp etc.) based on Ballet with maybe a touch of MTV.
Making music with your feet! Jazz and Ballet are recommended for intermediate and advance levels. Karen teaches all styles including Classical, Broadway, and Funk.
Private Voice (Teen and Adult)
Vocal technique, - Learning how to control the voice as an instrument. Generally, the student should be physically mature enough for voice changes to be mostly settled. (12-14 ish). By audition and appointment. half-hour lessons, voice recorder advised.
Private Vocal Coaching (PreTeen through Adult)
While we’ve always done vocal coaching in the Theatre Workshops, these ½ hour private lessons have been added to give students specific help with finding appropriate material, developing interpretation, establishing work habits, and building vocal audition portfolio.
